Dream Chasers – No Excuses

“I don’t have enough money”

“I don’t have the time”

“I’m too busy”

“I’m looking for the right collaborator”

“I don’t know how”

Sorry, Dream Chasers, but your excuses just don’t wash anymore. I believe in you too much to let you excuse away the life of your dreams.

We live in the age of free information. If we don’t have enough money to take the right course, we can cobble together an education as we sift through Google and YouTube. If we don’t have time to chase our dreams, how is it that we have so much time to watch The Bachelor? You don’t need the right collaborator. You are the right collaborator.

I believe that there is something (any little thing) that you can do right now that will get you closer to your dreams.

So, what I’d really love for you to do right now, for five minutes on this day of rest is to sit down and write out all of the reasons excuses you have for not getting started right now.

Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Welcome back. Got your list? I’m guessing it’s only three or four items long. They’re probably really grown-up, practical reasons for not starting your own soap-making business or karaoke bar.

I think that our main reason for not going after the life of our dreams is fear. Fear that we’ll have to work really hard at something that’s meaningful to us and not succeed.

Here’s the deal. It will be hard work. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that you’re already working hard at something. Maybe it’s a hobby that fulfills your creative itch. Maybe it’s a dreary day job. Most of us actually work really, really hard, almost every day.

I used to work really hard at marketing commercial insurance.

Go ahead. Let that one sink in.

It was a very valuable learning experience for me. I learned a ton about finance and business and the communicative tools of business. The most important tool that I honed during my corporate career was (you guessed it) marketing! I learned that marketing is really just telling your story really well to the right people.

I digress.

My point is that you’re already working hard. Chances are you’re working so hard that you have to come home and watch three or four hours of “The Good Wife” on Netflix to decompress (have I mentioned that I really love that show?).

Why not take one of those hours of the night and learn as much as you can about the field of your dreams?

I can promise you that working hard at something that lights your fire will make the hours pass quickly. If the hours are passing slowly, you’re probably dreaming the wrong dream (either someone else’s dream or the dream of making money). This will require some reevaluation to be certain. We Dream Chasers are constantly reevaluating anyway, right??

I’ve said it before that not one of us is safe from disappointment. Newsflash, loves: disappointment won’t actually kill you. You’ll cry in the shower and eat Cool Whip out of the container for a few days and then you’ll get on with it. We survive disappointment all the time. An aversion to disappointment is keeping you from your dreams.

So here’s your second assignment of the weekend:

Do one thing right now that you think you can’t do. Open a YouTube channel. Write a script for the first episode of your television show. Do just one, little thing that you don’t have time or money for. Better yet, start saving money. Start looking at how you spend your time in an honest way. Maybe instead of Tweeting about all the wonderful things you’re going to do when you have time, you could spend that time actually doing them.

We’re not talking about being reckless here. We’re talking about shuffling energy around from that which is dragging you down to that which lifts you up. Doesn’t sound so scary when we put it that way, does it?

Forgive all your little fears and your tricky procrastination techniques. Invest your time and money in something that makes your heart sing instead of numbing it from the pain of living someone else’s life.

Just know that tomorrow, after your YouTube channel is up and running and your first script is written, you’ll have to get up, put on your mascara and your big-girl panties, and film the damn thing.

I believe in you so strongly,

Er xo
